Oral and Dental Health

(About the Program)

It is an associate degree program that trains health technicians who can assist the dentist in clinical practices and take part in patient preparation, sterilization, clinical organization, and preventive oral and dental health services.

About the Program

The Oral and Dental Health Program aims to train knowledgeable and experienced health technicians who are needed in the field of dental health, have received associate degree education, and can assist dentists. Within the program, students are expected to gain professional knowledge and skills in clinical workflow, patient preparation, sterilization, support for the treatment process, and preventive oral and dental health practices.

Professional Role

An oral and dental health technician is a health professional who assists the dentist in the treatment processes of oral cavity and jaw disorders carried out by the dentist, can convey basic information to patients to develop oral and dental health awareness, and supports preventive dentistry practices under dentist supervision.

Duration of Education and Title

The Oral and Dental Health Program covers a two-year associate degree education process. Students who successfully complete the program are awarded an associate degree diploma, and graduates may work with the title of health technician.

Duties and Areas of Responsibility

Oral and dental health technicians contribute to the safe and orderly execution of dentistry services. In this scope, their main areas of duty are as follows:

  • Supporting information processes aimed at improving patients' oral and dental health awareness.
  • Preparing the patient who applies to the dentist before treatment and directing the patient to the dental unit.
  • Assisting the dentist during the treatment process.
  • Contributing to sterilization processes for instruments used after treatment.
  • Following up treatment materials and consumables.
  • Acting in accordance with clinical order, patient and employee safety, and infection control processes.
  • Supporting preventive dentistry practices under dentist supervision.

Practical Training

In the program, theoretical courses are more prominent in the first year and practical training is more prominent in the second year. Students carry out their practical training in oral and dental health units of Erciyes University Faculty of Dentistry.

Employment Areas

Program graduates may work in dental laboratories, dental clinics, dental health units of hospitals, and private practices of public and private health institutions.

Vertical Transfer Opportunity

Graduates of the Oral and Dental Health Program may transfer to the undergraduate programs of Health Administration, Health Institutions Management, Health Institutions Administration, and Health Management if they are successful in the Vertical Transfer Exam administered by OSYM.
